Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been found guilty in the 2002 rape case. The sentencing in the case will be on August 28. He will be kept in preventive custody till then. The verdict was given by Panchkula’s Special CBI Court

To maintain the security in the view of the verdict, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar had said: “Whatever is the verdict, we will implement it. Ready to deal with any circumstances, security arrangements are in place.Appeal people, especially Dera followers to remain calm.”

The case against him dates back to 2002 when a woman wrote an anonymous letter to the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee claiming that she and other sadhvis were raped by the spiritual guru. She had written in the letter that after he raped them he had warned her to keep quiet and had also spoke of his political clout in Haryana and Punjab.

Over 60,000 followers of Ram Rahim Singh had followed him to the Panchkula court as the CBI court was announcing the verdict.

Ahead of the verdict on the rape case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, heavy security has been deployed in Punjab as well as Haryana. The Haryana government imposed an indefinite curfew in Sirsa as a precautionary measure and a 72-hour ban on mobile internet services, except voice calls.
