Delhi University professor GN Saibaba on March 7 was awarded life sentence under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by Gadchiroli court. Among others who are convicted include former journalist Prashant Rahi and JNU student Hemant Mishra.
Court had convicted Saibaba and 5 others for ‘supporting Maoist ideology’ and waging war against India.
Saibaba, Professor of English at Ram Lal Anand college Delhi , was arrested in 2013 from his residence after JNU student Hemant Mishra in police custody told officials that he was acting as a messenger between Professor Saibaba and Maoists who were hiding in the Abujmad forests in Chhattisgarh. Later, Saibaba was suspended from DU after Maharashtra Police arrested him in 2014.

Later, due to health issues, GN Saibaba remained behind the bars for 14 months and in July 2015 was given bail while other accused are still in the jail.
Few days back, Supreme Court had granted him bail and said that Maharashtra government has been “extremely unfair” to him. Saibaba had also written a letter to college authorities requesting them to let him return to the college so that he can continue teaching there. After which one-member committee was formed to look into the matter.
