In a shocking incident, an e-rickshaw driver, Ravinder, was brutally beaten to death with bricks wrapped in towels and brass knuckles allegedly by a group of students on May 28 evening. The reason? He had reportedly stopped two of the students from urinating in the open.
According to a Times of India report, the Delhi Police said that the incident took place near Gate no. 4 of GTB Nagar Metro station. Earlier in the day, at about 1.30 pm, Ravinder had parked his vehicle near the spot and was waiting for a couple of his friends for lunch when he noticed two young men urinating against the wall of a public toilet.
Manoj, an eyewitness, said that he saw Ravinder walking towards the duo—both were holding beer cans—and asked them not to urinate there. The advice was followed up with an argument between them after which Ravinder pulled out a few coins from his pocket and asked them to take the money and pay for using the toilet. Angered by his gesture, they pulled his collar and threatened him with dire consequences.
“Aaj raat tak teri haalat kharab kar denge (we will make you pay for this by tonight),” both the students said, according to Manoj.
As per the eyewitness’ accounts, around 20-25 students came back to the same spot at night and noticed Ravinder standing with a few others at the stand at 8 pm and walked up to him.
“They started hitting him with brass knuckles and bricks wrapped in towels. Some people who tried to stop the attackers were thrashed as well,” said Manoj, an eyewitness.
He tried to save Ravinder but was attacked as well. He managed to free himself and rushed to the victim’s house, crying for help. However, the attackers had fled from the spot by that time, leaving Ravinder lying on the road.
Virender, the brother of deceased e-rickshaw driver, said that Ravinder had complained of pain in his back. After reaching home, the back pain intensified, following which, the family members rushed him to Bara Hindu Rao hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
A case has been registered and teams have been formed to identify and nab the accused. No breakthrough had been made in the case until Sunday night.
