In the age of technology, there are also chances that one might fall victim of fake news and seems like this time it’s none other than the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. For past few days, a fake appeal attributed to the PM is doing the rounds on social media and messaging apps.
The hoax message is somewhat similar to the one which also emerged last year during Diwali. The fake news which is being circulated this time asks people to use only those products and ingredients which are made in India ahead of the festival of light.
Last year, a fake message was doing the rounds on social media just before Diwali asking people to not use Chinese crackers. According to the last year’s message, the step was taken after China did not support India at the United Nations (UN) in recognising Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a ‘Globally Designated Terrorist’.
But this time, the reason for circulation of fake news can be cited to the ongoing stand-off between Indian and Chinese troops at Doklam in Sikkim. In 2016, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has asked the users on social media to not pay attention to these fake posts.
