The Supreme Court has delivered its verdict on Aadhaar pronouncing the unique identity number as constitutionally valid. While asserting that it empowers marginalised sections of the society, the five-judge constitutional bench also listed out a host of services for which linking of Aadhaar is not mandatory.
“One can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” said the judges underlining that Aadhaar details could not be shared with private parties. While it’s mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN, for income tax returns and for availing welfare schemes and subisidies, it’s no more a necessity for opening a bank account. Also, private entities like telecom operators or E-commerce firms cannot bother you for Aadhaar linking. So, Aadhaar is not needed to get a SIM card or shopping online.
The court also said children can’t be denied any benefit for not having Aadhaar. No Aadhaar is needed for school admissions or any other government scheme which benefits children.
A majority of netizens welcomed the verdict given they will no longer have to share their aadhaar details with private entities.
Phew!! Relief SC strikes down Section57 of the Aadhaar Act and also ruled that no Private entities are no longer allowed to use Aadhaar for verification purposes and it’s not mandatory for bank transactions and mobile connection

No need to share #Aadhaar details with any telecom company; no bank or pvt company can demand it. But I’ll have to share Aadhaar in my tax return. My understanding so far of #AadhaarVerdict

Some expressed concern over the PAN linking with Aadhaar and declaration of Aadhaar bill as money bill.
Officially #Aadhaar is not mandatory, but by making PAN card linking mandatory, it is unofficially made mandatory.#AadhaarVerdict

Aadhar cannot be a money bill by any stretch of imagination. SC upholding this as money bill creates a serious bias against the upper house in our parliamentary democracy.

Issues re #AadhaarVerdict 1) Not convinced abt cost-benefit analysis of making it mandatory for welfare benefits 2) Not convinced govt having misuse-able info is lesser evil than pvt companies having it 3) Not convinced allowing to pass as money bill isn’t a bad precedent (1/2)

Others also argued it’s too late as millions of people have already linked their aadhaar no. with private entities.
When amost everyone in the country has linked #Aadhaar, SC comes one day and says, ‘Ah, nahi bhi karoge toh chalege’. Kaafi jaldi bol diya! #AadhaarVerdict #AadhaarJudgment pic.twitter.com/hCC9h4Jhml

Shouldn’t the Mobile service providers and Banks come up with a facility to get the Aadhaar removed in cases where they are already linked? #AadhaarVerdict #AadhaarJudgment
