Just days after it was announced that Aadhaar card was mandatory to obtain a driving licence, it is being now reported that the government is coming up with an Aadhaar based biometric system for flyers. If the system comes into place, a passenger will need to give his thumb impression which act as his/her identification proof. However, this is reportedly applicable for domestic flyers since passengers flying international will require to show their passports.
According to a Times of India report, the government has directed Wipro to design an Aadhaar based biometric system to have an access at the airports across the country. Last year in December, it was reported that people would require their aadhaar card number to book their flight tickets. Even though it was not compulsory to give your aadhaar card number before booking flight tickets, it was reported that it would soon be made compulsory.
“It was felt a joint system be developed that can be replicated by all airports. Wipro has been asked to develop a concept note in this regard after consulting all stakeholders, including the JV airport operators. We are seeing what all airport processes can be made e-enabled,” Times of India quoted Guruprasad Mohapatra, Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman as saying.
The AAI chief added that this move was taken for security purpose and also to make it convenient for the flyers. Describing the system, the AAI chief said that all that a passenger need to do is give your th8umb impression and enter the airport adding that aadhaar card number will also be required to book air tickets.
This comes days after it was reported that all existing subscribers of mobile services will have to go for Aadhaar-based re-verification soon, with the government instructing telecom operators to initiate the process.
