While you keep coming across several bone-chilling crime stories every single time you flip through the newspaper or a news channel, there have been some high-profile deaths that have come under scanner and have caught people’s attention and shocked them to the core. What is worse is that some of the cases of deaths remained unsolved with them being called suicides. Even the though the investigation agencies have come up with various theories, nobody still knows whether these were really suicides or whether the conspiracy theories attached to them had any truth.
Following is a list of mysterious deaths that left India baffled:
Sunanda Pushkar
Wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a hotel room in Delhi in 2014. Her sudden demise made it to the headlines and in no time, people alleged the involvement of her husband in her death. What was notable was that she died just a day after she indulged in a Twitter spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. It was alleged that Shashi Tharoor had an affair with Mehr.
While reports said that she had committed suicide, post-mortem at AIIMS revealed that it was an unnatural death. Shashi Tharoor, however, has denied all allegations against him for his alleged involvement in his wife’s death.
Divya Bharti
Even after 24 years, late Bollywood actress Divya Bharti’s untimely death remains a mystery. On the unfateful night of April 5, 1993, the 19-year-old actress who was married to producer Sajid Nadiadwala fell from the fifth floor of her apartment in Mumbai and died.
While some claimed that she lost her balance and fell when she tried to stand on the 12-inch ledge, some theories also hint to her husband’s alleged involvement in her death. Whether it was just an accident or a pre-planned murder is not known even 24 years after the tragic incident.
Police couldn’t gather enough evidence and shut the case in 1998.
Lal Bahadur Shashtri
The first Prime Minister of the country – Lal Bahadur Shastri – visited Tashkent, Russia and met Pakistan President Ayub Khan in 1966. He was found dead a day after that. It was assumed that Lal Bahadur Shastri died of multiple heart attacks. No postmortem was carried out in the case. His wife cried foul and said that his body had turned blue with cuts all over his body. In fact, Shastri’s doctor who accompanied him to Tashkent was hit by a car when he was on his way to give his statement before the committee.
Years after his death, there are still multiple conspiracy theories over how he died. If there was any truth in them may never be revealed.
Jiah Khan
Bollywood woke up to the shocking news of Jiah Khan’s death on June 4, 2013. The Nishabdh actress was found hanging at her residence in Mumbai. Although she was suspected to have committed suicide, her mother registered a case against Aditya Pancholi’s son and Jiah Khan’s ex-beau Sooraj Pancholi and alleged that he was responsible for her death.
The police officials even recovered a letter which revealed gory details of her pregnancy and how Suraj allegedly took her to the hospital and extricated the foetus with his hands before flushing it down the toilet. Suraj was arrested for a brief period of time and later released on bail. While Suraj is now working on his career in Bollywood, the mystery behind Jiah’s death still remains a mystery.
Sheena Bora
The sensational Sheena Bora ‘murder’ case is filled with twists, turns and a lot of confusion. Indrani Mukherjea, wife of media baron Peter Mukherjea, was arrested for her alleged role in murdering her own daughter Sheena Bora. Indrani Mukherjea is said to have introduced Sheena Bora as her sister, but reports suggest that Sheena was, in fact, her daughter born out of her relationship with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna who has also been arrested in the case.
A missing report was filed in 2012 after Indrani claimed that Sheena Bora had gone to the US. It was earlier suspected that it was Sheena’s affair with Peter Mukherjea’s son Rahul Mukherjea led to her alleged murder. The entire story is nothing less than a plot of a Bollywood thriller. Police alleged that Indrani, Sanjeev Khanna, and Indrani’s driver kidnapped, murdered her and burnt her corpse in a forest. The case is still in court and confusion still prevails.
Amar Singh Chamkila
A popular but controversial Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his singing partner Amarjot were killed in broad daylight by a gang of men. Amar was known for his bold songs which were believed to be ahead of its time. He wrote songs surrounding the village life in Punjab and talked about extra-marital relationships, anger issues in Punjabi men, and the issue of drug abuse in the state.
People came up with several conspiracy theories but no arrests were ever made in connection to the case. The case was never solved.
Rizwanur Rahman
Rizwanur Rahman murder was one of the most talked about murder cases in 2011. Rizwanur Rahman belonging to a middle-class family fell in love and married Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist and the owner of Lux Cozi company Ashok Todi.
Priyanka Todi was allegedly forcefully separated from her husband by her father who was not happy with their marriage. Rizwanur filed a case with an NGO and made efforts to get his wife back soon after, his body was found on railway tracks. Conspiracy theories suggest that he had been murdered by Ashok Todi because he was not happy with his relationship with her daughter. None of it was proved in the court.
CBI claimed that the cause of death was suicide. Additionally, the investigating officer of the case also mysteriously died.
