Ghaziabad: Three UP cops suspended for detaining couple in ‘anti-Romeo’ drive

No women police officer was there in the squad when couple was detained

Anti-Romeo squad has come under scanner amid allegations that a section of cops are resorting to moral policing. The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended three policemen for detaining a couple from a park in Ghaziabad as a part of the ongoing drive and taking them to a police station where no women cop was present.

Notedly, it is mandatory that a woman police personnel has to be present at the police station, only than a woman could be taken into custody. The latest development comes amid widespread criticism of ongoing drive that was supposed to be a crackdown on eve-teasers but have also been imposed on the consenting adults.

After the hue and cry over the issue, The UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath instructed police not to harass consenting young men and women found together.

The police officers who are suspended after the incident came to light are Mehtab (head constable), Pankaj Kumar (constable) and Dilip Kumar (constable).

Ranvir Singh, who is SSP Deepak Kumar’s spokesperson said, “The PCR van had no women personnel deployed. A video shot by some passerby also went viral and senior superintendent of police ordered suspension after the incident came to his knowledge.”

The couple was spotted by police officials at Ambedkar Park in Navyug Market and was later taken to Kotwali police station in a PCR van.

The UP government has formed anti-Romeo squad in order to punish eve-teasers who harass women and girls in the public places.

Javeed Ahmed, UP DGP had earlier said, “Through this squad, we are not trying to harass people but we are trying to take action against those who are harassing others.”
