Govt revises deadline again, old Rs 500 notes will be accepted at petrol pumps till 2 December

The Government cuts short the deadline for the use of old Rs 500 notes from 15 December to 2 December.

The central government on Thursday announced that  the deadline for the use of Rs 500 notes at petrol pumps and for Air tickets has been cut down to 2 December as against 15 December.

The government had earlier said that the deadline was 15 December  which has now been brought down to 2 December. According to reports, the current deadline is applicable only for petrol pumps and air-tickets. The deadline is still 15 December for the rest of the utilities including railway ticket counters, public bus ticket counters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier mentioned that restricting the tax elusion was the main motive behind banning the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes suddenly. However, according to reports, this unexpected announcement by the government has led to the disruption of approximately 86% of nation’s currency.

As a result of demonetision drive, people across the nation especially in the rural areas where E-wallet system are not a popular trend as yet have been struggling even for their day to day prerequisites. The government had allowed the use of Rs 500 notes and Rs 1000 notes at select places including petrol pumps, metro stations or for the payment of daily household bills like electricity bills and gas bills.

The government has been revising the deadlines for old currency usage for quite some time now. The government had revised the dates earlier on 24 November.
