Of late, judges in India have been among the only few upholders of equality and freedom a citizen is entitled to under the Constitution. However, an incident in Himachal Pradesh has shown that some of them are doing exemplary work outside the courts as well.
On Thursday, Himachal Pradesh high court acting chief justice Sanjay Karol was on his way to his office when he came across a crowd surrounding an ailing man on a street in the busy Lakkar Bazar area of Shimla, a report in Hindustan Times says.
Karol asked his driver to stop the car and realised that the man, who had collapsed after suffering a seizure, needed to be hospitalised. Karol told his driver and some locals to use his official car and take the patient to the hospital, he started walking towards his office.

Eventually, a police pilot vehicle dropped Karol at the high court. The patient, who was identified as Inder Dev Sharma, was diagnosed with epilepsy. He is currently undergoing treatment.
Pertinently, this is not the first time Karol has been seen actively tackle situations. Earlier this year, Karol was literally patrolling the streets to assess the water crisis in the state’s capital.
When Supreme Court judges sang for Kerala
Even Supreme Court judges have, in the past, expressed solidarity and concern for issues that have plagued citizens. Just last month, two apex court judges – Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice K M Joseph – who grew up in Kerala that was recently ravaged by floods belted out a few songs at a fundraising event in New Delhi.
The event was held for the affected people of the coastal state where the floods had left nearly 450 people dead and a million homeless.
At the event, it was Justice Kurian Joseph who led the rendition of ‘We shall overcome, someday’ along with Bollywood singer Mohit Chauhan.

Justice Joseph paid a singing tribute to Kerala’s fishing community by intoning a popular song from the movie Amaram. Through the event, the organizers were able to raise Rs 10 lakh for the flood-affected people of the coastal state.
Rs 25,000 from every judge’s pocket
Following the catastrophic floods that hit Kerala in August, the outgoing Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, announced that each judge of the Supreme Court will contribute Rs 25,000 each to the Kerala flood relief fund.
In fact, the government’s top lawyer Attorney General KK Venugopal donated Rs 1 crore to the flood relief fund, an ANI report said.
