Months after installing a statue of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse in Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha is all set to install yet another statue of Godse in Kalyan city in the Thane district of Maharashtra. The statue will reportedly weigh three tonnes.
While speaking to Indian Express, national spokesperson of the Hindu Mahasabha, Pandit Pramod Joshi said, “A two-foot-high white marble bust of Nathuram Godse is ready in the Mahasabha’s Delhi office. It weighs three tonnes. It will be brought here,” adding that he was soon going to purchase a land where the statue will be installed. However, Joshi affirmed that they were not in the process of making a memorial.
The move has not gone down too well with the members of the opposition. The Congress leaders hit out at the BJP and asserted that such incidents were on rise since the time the ruling government came into power. “The fascist forces, who killed Mahatma Gandhi are now blatantly raising their heads once again to continuously throttle Bapu’s ideals and teachings, while the government is consciously turning a blind eye to it,” Congress MLC Sanjay Dutt said in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
He further affirmed that the opposition will not let the group install Nathuram Godse’s statue and that construction of the memorial was just a “blot” on “progressive” Maharashtra. Dutt also demanded the ruling government to look into the issue and the stop the construction.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil claimed that they had not given permission for the construction of the statue and have also ordered an inquiry into the matter.
