A woman from Mumbai has been booked for allegedly duping people by collecting donations worth lakhs of rupees in the name of veteran playback singer Lata Mangeshkar. The news was confirmed by the Bharat Ratna awardee’s niece Rachna. Revati Khare, a resident of Nallasopara area of Mumbai, used to meet different people after printing fake letterheads in the singer’s name and reportedly boasted about her connections with the vocalist. While collecting donations from prominent individuals and NGOs, she would promise the people to get the singer to perform for them at various occasions, Mumbai Mirror reported.
According to reports, the matter came to light after one of the donors messaged Mangeshkar and congratulated her for taking up social welfare.
A case has been filed against Khare at Gamdevi Police Station under sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the IPC. The police are trying to ascertain the number of people who were conned by Khare, who is absconding as of now.
Mangeshkar’s niece told The Indian Express that the singer was upset that her name was used to cheat people. She added,
She is feeling very bad that innocent people had to suffer. She was not angry, but sad. So, she asked us to file a complaint with the police so those innocent people who had to suffer can get justice. So we have lodged a FIR at Gamdevi Police station in Mumbai.
