After centre making Aadhaar card mandatory, the Supreme Court on Friday questioned the government how Aadhar can be made compulsory when the order passed by the apex court stated that it should be optional.
In the latest development, the Supreme Court asked Centre ‘how can u make Aadhaar card mandatory when we have passed an order to make it optional?’
Replying to which Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi in the apex court said “it is found that a number of pan cards are being used to divert funds to shell companies and to prevent this, the only option available is to make Aadhaar card mandatory”.
This has come after Supreme court in its last order related to the issue said that Aadhar card should not be made mandatory for government schemes. The court in its judgement said, “The Union of India shall give wide publicity in the electronic as well as print media including radio and television networks that it is not compulsory for a citizen to obtain an Aadhaar card. To receive benefits due to citizens, aadhaar card won’t be mandatory.”

Aadhaar card was introduced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in order to help the government to curb the leakages while transferring benefits of the subsidies to citizens.
The central government has made aadhaar compulsory while filing income tax returns and when applying for a PAN card. A few days back, Indian railways has announced that for booking train tickets Aadhar will be mandatory.
