Indian Navy, on December 14, commissioned INS Kalvari, its latest warfare submarine. Indigenously built by Mazagon Dock Limited, it is the first of the six Scorpene-class submarines. The 1,565-tonne submarine is named after the deadly tiger shark Kalvari. Considered to be the deadliest and the most modern non-nuclear submersible warship India has till date, INS Kalvari is India’s first submarine in 17 years. From advanced stealth features which hide it from detection to the ability to launch torpedoes both while submerged or on the surface, INS Kalvari has it all. It was built as a part of Project-75 under a 3-billion dollar contract and was designed by French naval defence & energy company DCNS. INS Kalvari is India’s 16th submarine.
