As you know, many villages in Punjab have been affected by this flood. Khalsa Aid volunteers are rescuing people and navigating on boats from as far as 7-8 kms, said 65-year-old Tejinder Pal Singh, a Khalsa Aid volunteer who has been engaged in rescue work at Punjab’s Kanga village.
Over 100 volunteers of Khalsa Aid are involved in rescue operations and providing relief materials to those in the flood-affected areas of Punjab. In the last five days, the UK-based NGO have reached out to thousands in flood-affected areas of Jalandhar, Ropar and Phillaur.
We have so far rescued around 2000 people from flood affected areas, said Gurpreet Singh, the NGO’s admin head from Patiala and added that it is providing resh hot meal to them. Along with dry fruits, milk and clean drinking water to the flood victims.
The organisation has pledged Rs 1.3 crore towards the ongoing relief work in the state. The NGO worked alongside the NDRF helping them fill a breach in Sutlej river (khalsa-5)
“Our team also worked with NDRF and Indian army in Phillaur where we help them fill a breach using sandbags in the Sutlej river. Situation of flood in Punjab are terrible right now and people are stranded in the villages, he told inuth.com.
Punjab is facing its worst floods in 40 years. As many as 326 villages across the state have been adversely affected by the flooding in river Sutlej due to the incessant rain followed by discharge of water from Bhakra dam causing extensive damage to standing crops of nearly 1.20 lakh acres of farm land.
