Amid hue and cry over inordinate delay in declaration of final years results, the University of Mumbai is now facing difficulty in linking answer-sheets to students. The university was to complete assessments of its exams by July 31 this year. However, the pending results will now be tentatively declared by Aug 16. While the assessment of over 84% of the answer-sheets has been completed, the results of less than 10% students have been declared so far.
Despite most of the assessment work being complete, linkage of answer-sheets to students through data points such as roll numbers, seat numbers and barcodes is taking longer than usual, sources told Indian Express. Notably, the University had opted for online assessment of exam answer sheets from this year.

While several reasons have been attributed to the delay, one was the lag in linking marks to students, especially since two agencies were involved in scanning the papers this year — a measure put in place to ensure answerbooks are not tampered with.
The Bombay High Court rapped the University asking why the university implemented the online assessment system if it did not have the necessary infrastructure to implement it.
“You [teachers and the University] should have prepared in advance to meet the deadline. This is like demonetisation,” said a bench of justice BR Gavai and justice Riyaz Chagla.
The Court’s reaction came after a petition was filed alleging On-Screen-Marking (OSM) system has been introduced without making available infrastructure required for it, which led to a delay in declaring results.
Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also assured the state legislative council that he would investigate whether the pending results of the Mumbai University could not be declared before August 16. The opposition parties alleged that Fadnavis was being misled by the VC over the declaration of results.
