Lives of twelve hundred passengers, who were travelling by the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express, were saved by the presence of mind by the driver of the train. On Tuesday morning, train’s engine and nine coaches were derailed in Asangaon, near Mumbai.
One of the officials said that the motorman Ravindra Singh on realising the track ahead hit the brake so as to reduce the speed of the train considerably before reaching the defective spot. The railways had carried out pre-monsoon work and some work on the third line where the Duronto Express derailment took place. A railway official, however, refuted this to be the cause of the derailment. He said that the accident has occurred due natural calamity. “It can be seen that soil erosion up to 50 feet occurred on the hillside.Loose soil and boulders fell on the track, leading to the incident,” said the official.

Chief spokesperson of Central Railway, Sunil Udasi said, “I would like to reiterate that the driver did an excellent job of applying emergency brakes. As the train’s coaches were constructed with advanced LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) technology, they did not pile up on top of one another.”

Some of the locals said that few passengers suffered minor injuries, but Central Railway spokesperson A K Singh said no passenger was injured in the derailment. In last 10 days, this is the fourth derailment which has taken place in the country.
