The Hyderabad man works for Alawwal Bank in Riyadh. He had married the woman in 2015 and the couple has a 10-month-old baby.

A Hyderabad man has left everyone shocked after he gave ‘talaq’ (divorce) to his wife by giving an advertisement in a newspaper. After several instances of talaq via phone, email, WhatsApp, this incident comes as another shocker at a time when the entire country is debating on the issue of triple talaq.

According to an India Today report, the man – Mustaquddin, works for Alawwal Bank in Riyadh. He had married the woman in 2015 and the couple has a 10-month-old baby.

He took his wife to Saudi Arabia six months after their marriage. The couple returned to Hyderabad on February 2 and three weeks later, Mustaquddin took his wife and baby girl to his in-law’s house. He then left for Riyadh without informing his wife.

The woman tried contacting her husband, but Mustaquddin didn’t respond. It was later when her father-in-law informed her that Mustaquddin had already left for Saudi.

The woman received the shock of her life when she came across an advertisement in an Urdu daily. Mustaquddin announced his divorce through the advertisement.

The Allahabad High Court in 2016, observed that triple talaq is cruel and raised a question whether the Muslim Personal law could be amended to alleviate the sufferings of Muslim women.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear pleas challenging the validity of triple talaq, ‘nikah halala’ and polygamy practices among Muslims on May 11.

A bench comprising Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud said the matter will be heard by a Constitution bench during the summer vacation.
