Ignoring militant threats, thousands lined up for police jobs in J&K

A huge number of girls also queued up for the test, over 6,000 girls from Kashmir appeared for physical endurance test

Amid the growing tension in the valley and ignoring the warning of militants, several youngsters from Jammu and Kashmir turned up for the physical endurance test (PET) and physical standard test (PST) in order to qualify for the job in the J&K police department.

According to a report in the Times of India, for 698 vacancies of sub-inspector, as many as 67,218 candidates have applied. The number of those who came for the test from Kashmir were much higher than those from Jammu. Out of the total number of candidates, 35,722 are from Kashmir while 31,496 from Jammu.

A huge number of girls also queued up for the test, over 6,000 girls from Kashmir took the test for the police job. S P Vaid, J&K DGP said, “Dozens of Kashmiri girls broke all the shackles of a conservative society and participated in the recruitment drive.”

One of the candidates, Mohammad Rafiq Bhat, a science graduate who hails from old Srinagar said it is difficult to be a cop in Kashmir, “But I am ready to face the menace of militancy. They (militants) are not on the right path and proper treatment is required to treat this disease,” he added.

A woman candidate from Srinagar, Nusrat Jan, said that due to militancy, women have suffered a lot and by joining police she wants to help the local women.
