So as to not leave any seat vacant this year, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) of the premier engineering institute, Indian Institue of Technology (IITs) will be going through seven rounds of counselling this time. In 2106, as many as 73 seats could not be filled even after six admission rounds. This will be for the third time when JoSAA is conducting admissions to, IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other government-funded technical institutes.
According to a senior professor at IIT- Bombay, “Most students are very aware of their choice and interests so if they don’t get a seat in the desired department or institute, most don’t mind waiting and applying for IITs next year. So it is common for seats to remain vacant after the admissions are over”. He added that most of the unfilled seats were from the newer IITs.

The results of Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE-Adv) will be out on June 11. Those who pass JEE-adv can start applying for the institutes from June 15 to 26. Meanwhile, the first admission round will take place on June 28. According to a statement issued by JoSAA last year, it stated that 73 seats at the IITs remained vacant and out of total 912 seats at Indian School of Mines located in Dhanbad, 23 (2.52%) seats could not find any takers even after six rounds of counselling.

“Let’s hope that seven rounds will give students enough time to make an informed choice and choose an appropriate institute and course,” said an official from JoSAA.
