In a first, this Indian city is demolishing buildings to create an 18 acre forest

Raipur district collector is planning to create an oxy-zone and this natural forest will breathe out much-needed fresh air for this city.

While the world offers a collective sigh whenever there’s a news report about deforestation or the climate change, Chhattisgarh is taking matter into its own hands. The capital city – Raipur, wasn’t making just another statement when they said that they were “planting trees on whereever the land was available.” In fact, authorities are creating their own microcosmic forest within the district.

According to a report of The Better India, Omprakash Choudhary, the District Collector of Raipur, and his team are reforesting areas right at the heart of the city. He and his team are planting trees in the most impossible of places, where even no land was available.

The report suggests that right in the heart of the city where heavy traffic passes through, where 70 odd government buildings stood, where a huge commercial project was being proposed, where the land value is estimated to be Rs 1,000 crores – that’s where a forest will be created.

The effors of the District Collector are commendable. His dedication is so much that while the rest of the world is felling trees to construct buildings, here in Raipur, buildings have been demolished to plant trees.

The idea for this oxy-zone, something similar to the Central Park of New York, came from a citizens group. When the Raipur District Collector took this wish of the people to the Chief Minister of Chattisgarh Raman Singh, he unflinchingly gave a go ahead.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh government decided to forego a plot of land worth Rs 1,000 crore and a commercial project that would have brought in huge profits to do something right.
