Unable to bear a child in eight years of her marriage, a resident of Baroda, Rupal (name changed) will undergo a uterus transplant on May 18 at Pune’s Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute (GCLI). Hers will be the first case of uterine transplant in India. The donor, in this case, is Rupal’s mother.
According to a report in The Indian Express, her mother said that I am doing this so that Rupal can have her own child. She has gone through four abortions and lost two babies after full-term pregnancies. The first transplant will be performed on May 18 and the other one will be conducted on May 19.
A 22-year-old woman from Solapur who was born without uterus will also undergo uterus transplant at the same hospital on May 19. “We thought it was a case of delayed menstruation. Six months after she got married, doctors told us she did not have a uterus. What is the use of my uterus? If I give it to my daughter, at least she can have her own child,” said her mother.
On May 9, both women were admitted to Pune’s hospital and doctors are trying their best to make the transplants successful. Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, Medical Director at Galaxy Care Hospital said, “We have been planning the live donor uterine transplant for a year now”.
Till date, a total of 25 urine transplants have been conducted worldwide. In the year 2002, the first transplant was conducted in Saudi Arabia, however, it was in Sweden where a successful transplant was carried out in 2011.
