Pew Research Center in its latest religious data projection has claimed that by 2050, India will have the largest Muslim population. The Washington-based think tank has said that there will be 311 million Muslims in India by 2050, a population which will constitute 11 per cent of the world’s demography.
According to the report, young median age and high fertility rates will be the reasons behind the increase in population. Currently, Indonesia has the largest Muslim population.
The report also projected that Hindu’s population would rise to 1.3 billion and India will continue to house the largest number of Hindus in the world.
“The Muslim population will rise faster increasing from 14.4 per cent in 2010 to 18.4 per cent of the total population in 2050. However, three in four people in India will still be Hindus,” the report said.
Notedly, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and only second to Christianity in terms of demography.
Meanwhile, Christian population in India, which is at 2.5 per cent of the total population right now, will reduce to 2.3 per cent of the total population in 2050, the report added.
The US-based agency in its report further mentioned that the Muslims are the fastest growing religious groups in the world.
