The Army on Thursday rescued 39 local residents stuck in the flood at Runikhata area of Chirang district in Assam, ANI reported.Incessant rain has wreaked havoc in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya in the past few days. At least 3 people were killed and more than 4 lakh displaced due to floods and landslides across Assam since Tuesday, says a News18 report.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 17 out of 27 districts in the state have been affected. At least 749 villages have been inundated and nearly 17 thousand hectares of cropland are under flood waters. Barpeta is the worst affected district with 85,262 people reeling under the deluge, says News18 report.
In Arunachal Pradesh, two school going children died in a massive landslide in Tawang area. The Army and NDRF have been deployed to help with the rescue operations. In Meghalaya, the water level in the rivers is gradually increasing. The Regional Meteorological Centre at Guwahati has predicted heavy rainfall till this weekend, according to a NDTV report.
