Soon, AC-III tier coaches will be equipped with tea and coffee vending machines, CCTV cameras in the aisle and automatic room freshner dispensers. The new compartments will be introduced in the middle of this month with new features.
Besides this, the coaches will boast of a passenger information system installed above each door as well as the fire and smoke detector. The age-old stenciled plates indicating upper, middle and lower berths will be replaced by airline bars. Also, the toilet walls will have gel coating to prevent any kind of defacement by the unruly elements.
Initially, these state-of-art AC-III tier coaches will be introduced in the Humsafar Expresses, which will commute between Delhi and Gorakhpur, Indian Express reported. The Rail Coach Factory in Rae Bareli has designed these coaches. The coaches have been designed for four trains as of now.
During RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure as Railway minister, the AC-III tier had undergone a revamp as AC-III Economy on the Garib Rath trains. However, the design evoked criticism due to the introduction of a berth on the side row. The Railways have scrapped such a design since then.
Recently, the Indian Railways had announced several new initiatives for the passengers to enjoy a comfortable ride to their destination. For example, now the travellers can order food of their choice via smartphone apps. They have a vast array of choices ranging from KFC to Dominoes Pizza to choose from. The passengers have often complained of poor food quality on board the trains.
