Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been ranked as the cleanest city in the country while Gonda in Uttar Pradesh has been ranked as the dirtiest, as per the ‘Swachh Survekshan-2017’. The results of the survey were announced on Thursday by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu.
While Indore is the cleanest city, Bhopal has bagged the second position in the ranking of 434 cities. Vishakhapatnam was placed third among the top clean cities, the fourth slot has been claimed by Gujarat’s Surat, while Mysore, which would be first in the previous lists of clean cities, has slipped to the fifth place.
After Gonda, Bhusawal in Maharashtra holds the spot on the second most dirty city stands in the country. Bhusawal in Maharashtra has been ranked as the second dirtiest city, while Bihar’s Bagaha stands third and Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi fourth.
With 12 cities in the top list, Gujarat has bagged the maximum number of spots in the list of top 50 clean cities. It is followed by Madhya Pradesh which has 11 cities names and Andhra Pradesh with 8 cities in the list. Right at the bottom of the table is Uttar Pradesh which accounted for half of the bottom 50 cities in the cleanliness ranking. Rajasthan and Punjab have five towns each in the bottom 50, followed by Maharashtra-two and one each from Haryana, Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home constituency of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, jumped from 418th ranking in 2014 to 32nd in 2017.
As per the survey report, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh have emerged as major success stories.
