Inspiring! How slum dwellers got together to help students injured in Punjabi Bagh flyover accident

Setting an example for all the Delhiites, slum dwellers got together and left no stone unturned to help the students in the Punjabi Bagh flyover accident

Amid reports of public apathy towards accident victims in Delhi, some of the slum dwellers showed the national capital how they should actually act under such situations. The fourth student identified as Garima who was among the seven students who met with a fatal car accident on the Punjabi Bagh flyover in Delhi succumbed to her injuries yesterday.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, the slum dwellers residing near the area where the accident took place left no stone unturned to help the accident victims when their car fell off the flyover. The report stated that a man identified as Santosh heard a loud thud and rushed to see what the matter was. He called out to his neighbours after he saw the call lying upside down. While speaking to the daily, Santosh recalled that none of the students in the car were moving or calling out for help.

“All the seven inside were unconscious and piled up on each other. I don’t think anyone was moving or calling out for help,” Santosh told HT. Another local claimed that they tried to break the window but there was not enough space to pull the victims out of the toppled car. Following which, they arranged for hammers, bricks to pull the students out.  “We did not have any motor vehicles and it was not practically possible to drive any car down from the flyover. So, we decided to load the victims on our cycle carts and pedal them up the flyover so that they could be rushed to hospital,” another local said.

The police officials affirmed that the locals did all they could in their power and did not turn a blind eye when the mishap took place. On Monday, a Honda City car carrying seven students of Delhi Institute of Professional Studies who were on their way to write an exam at Indraprastha college, fell off the Punjabi Bagh flyover killing two of them on the spot.
