Jayalalithaa's funeral: Amma buried with full military honours at Marina beach

Jayalalithaa's last rites will be performed on Tuesday around 4:30pm at Marina Beach

All flags will fly half-mast for late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who died in Chennai late on Monday night. Her mortal remains have been placed at the Rajaji hall in Chennai for public homage.

After fighting a 74-day battle for life, she breathed her last at the Apollo Hospital on Monday. The 68-year-old leader died 24 hours after suffering a cardiac arrest. Her last rites will be performed on Tuesday around 4:30pm at Marina Beach.

The Tamil Nadu government has declared a seven-day mourning. Schools and colleges in the state will be closed for three days.

Senior party leader and Jaya’s close aide O Panneerselvam was sworn in as the new Chief Minister, shortly after 1am on Tuesday. Thirty-one ministers were also sworn in with him.
