J&K: Body of Army officer found with bullet marks in Shopian, was 'kidnapped' by terrorists yesterday

Kashmiri Army officer's bullet-riddled body was found in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. Here's what we know so far

The body of an army officer with numerous bullet marks in his head and abdomen was found in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on May 10. The army officer has been identified as Lieutenant Umar Fayyaz who was a resident of the Kulgam district.

According to news reports, the officer was abducted and murdered by terrorists yesterday. The terrorists reportedly disposed of the body of the slain officer after shooting him. Reports suggest that Umar had recently joined the army and had gone to attend a marriage of a relative last night. The police officials have launched a probe and are currently investigating the matter.

The army officer was taken at gunpoint and shot near the Herman Chowk area.

This incident comes days after at least two dozen villages in Shopian district had been cleared off after the Indian Army along with other security forces launched a huge anti-terror operation in the area. The operation came in the wake of numerous terror attacks that took place in the district. Suspected militants were seen roaming freely in the area in a video that recently went viral.

Terrorists have been targeting police officials for quite some time now. In March, terrorists reportedly barged into the residence of an Assistant Sub-Inspector of police and a Constable in the Shopian district and ransacked their houses. They fled the scene after firing gunshots in the air.
