The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will soon make it mandatory for all part-time students to have a minimum attendance of 75 percent. Starting from the winter session 2018, students of all part-time courses which includes BA, MA, MTech, PG Diploma, MPhil and PhD, will have to meet the minimum attendance requirement to qualify for the end-semester of their respective courses.
The circular was issued by Assistant Registrar(Evaluation) Sajjan Singh, based on recommendations of the compulsory attendance committee. However, if a student is absent on valid medical grounds then 60 percent attendance will be enough for him/her to appear for the exams, reports PTI.

The official circular also states that MPhil and PhD students will have to take prior permission from the authorities if they stay away from the university for academic requirements.
The university will provide an attendance sheet to the teachers who will put in the information and submit it to their respective schools/centres.
The circular has been met with criticism from both teachers and students alike. JNU Teachers Association has decided to boycott the compulsory attendance for students saying that it was “unproductive” and “meaningless” form of bureaucratic work for teachers.
The JNU Student’s Union (JNUSU), while opposing the decision, burnt the circular on Friday and announced that they will go on a strike on January 15.
