JNU requests for Army tanks in campus to remind students of sacrifices made by Armed forces

The Army tank will be placed in a “prominent place” on the campus so that it can remind the students of the sacrifices that Army makes

Weeks after a ‘Wall of Heroes’ was inaugurated at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to commemorate the martyrs, Vice Chancellor of the varsity CM Jagadesh Kumar has now requested union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and General VK Singh to help him in “procuring an Army tank”. The tank will reportedly be placed in a “prominent place” on the campus so that it can remind the students of the sacrifices that Army makes.

The VC made the statement at the first ever celebration of Kargil Vijay Diwas on the JNU campus. Speaking at the event, Kumar said: “It’s an important day for us to remember the sacrifices made by men in the defence forces to keep the safety and security of this country… We would like to request VK Singh and also Pradhan ji to help us procure an Army tank so that we can put it in a prominent place in JNU. The presence of the Army tank will constantly remind thousands of students who pass through this university about the great sacrifices and valour of the Indian Army.” Both Dharmendra Pradhan and General VK Singh were present at the event which began with a Tiranga March.

The event which was organised by the university administration and Veterans India had cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Major General (retd) GD Bakshi and author Rajiv Malhotra in attendance.

The thought that there needs to be a military tank placed in the varsity to “instill nationalism” had been initiated after the event on February 9, 2016 where anti-India slogans were allegedly raised and students were arrested for sedition.

Earlier while inaugurating the ‘Wall of Heroes’, Kumar had said that our soldiers are our guardians. “They provide our nation’s security and peace. JNU’s association with our soldiers is an honour for us. This is the real nationalist JNU,” he had said.
