Kanpur journalist shot dead by unknown men, UP govt orders probe

UP CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered the DGP of Kanpur to follow up on the investigation as well

A Kanpur-based journalist working with a national Hindi daily was fatally shot by bike borne assailants in district’s Bilhaur area on Thursday evening.

Naveen Srivastava, who worked as a contributor to Daily Hindustan, succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital.

The incident reportedly happened at a market near Billhaur Nagar Palika around 5:30 pm when three men on a two-wheeler arrived at Naveen’s hosiery shop where he was present. The assailants shot him after he came out of the shop.

The trio fled the spot on their motorcycle soon after committing the crime. On hearing the gunshots, other shopkeepers rushed him to the hospital, however, he died on the way, police said. The reason for the killing is unclear, police said, adding that top officials have rushed to the crime spot.

“Journalist Naveen Srivastava was shot at by 3-4 assailants while he was sitting in his hosiery shop. We hope to nab the criminals as soon as possible. DM & SSP of Kanpur Nagar are already on the spot. Couple of local police teams formed to crack the case”: ADG (Law and Order) told ANI.

The incident comes over two months after the death of journalist Santanu Bhowmick, who was killed at Mandai in West Tripura district while covering a roadblock by a tribal party- the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT). On September 5, unidentified assailants also killed senior journalist Gauri Lankesh outside her home in Bengaluru, a murder that triggered massive outrage across the country.
