Kargil martyr’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur files complaint with DCW after receiving rape threats

Gurmehar Kaur, the Delhi university student who shot to fame over her facebook post against ABVP, has filed a complaint at Delhi commission of Woman for receiving rape threats.

Kaur, who is the daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, has said that she has received a barrage of threatening messages online.

“I think it is very scary when people threaten you with violence or with rape…Giving rape threats to women of your country in the name of nationalism… is just not correct,” Kaur told an English News Channel.

Meanwhile, DCW chief has called on Delhi Police to take strict action against people who have made rape remarks against Kaur

“Police must take action against those boys giving rape threats to Gurmehar Kaur and set an example,” DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal

Alluding to ABVP’s involvement in violence at Ramjas college over  invitation to Umar Khaled for an event, Kaur changed her Facebook profile picture holding a placard which reads, “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP”.

The campaign went viral on social media with many supporting Kaur while others slammed her for taking the stand against BJP’s  youth wing.

Students from different campuses replaced their profile pictures on Instagram and Facebook with the picture of Gurmehar holding a placard against ABVP.

Kaur was just 2 years old when her father Captain Mandeep Singh laid down his life during the Kargil war.

Gurmehar Kaur has clarified that her opposition to the ABVP was not on the grounds of ideology but for what happened on the Delhi University campus last week.

Gurmehar said, “Stones were not pelted on Umar Khalid (the JNU student, who had been invited to a DU event, which the ABVP objected to). He was not even present there. The stones were pelted on students who were there.”
