A woman in Kerala refused to be rescued from a rapidly flooding house without her 25 dogs. Sally Varma, who works for Humane Society International revealed that the dogs were were found cowering under beds in fear even as the water levels were rising when the rescue team arrived.
As per NDTV, the lady, Sunitha, was rescued from Thrissur which is one of the worst hit areas in Kerala. But despite repeated entreaties, she would not agree to leaving unless all the dogs she had been sheltering were taken along with her. All the animals are abandoned pets or strays she had been taking care of.
Talking to AFP, Sally Varma said, “She sent back volunteers and rescue officials because they said they could not evacuate her dogs. She was just not willing to leave her dogs behind. She then managed to get in touch with us. When the rescue team reached her house, it was completely flooded and the dogs were huddled on beds.”
