Pune in Maharashtra witnessed violence and clashes on the first day of the year after lakhs of Dalits gathered at an event to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon.
At least one person died and many others got injured in an alleged face-off between Dalits and Marathas. Many vehicles, including a police van, were damaged in the commotion.
In 1818, Dalits had fought along with British to defeat Peshwas. They mark this event as a victory against caste-based oppression which is why it is alleged to have angered the upper caste Peshwas.
