Laws get stricter! Penalty for drunk driving raised five times, face jail for 10 years for causing death by accident

Before you think about jumping a red light or driving without a helmet check these new rules. that have increased the fine and jail term for specific cases

Amid a number of accident cases surfacing across the country, the Motor Vehicles Act have went on to become stricter. As per the new Motor Vehicles Act, the penalty for drunk driving case have increased five-fold to Rs 10,000. Also, the fine for driving without a valid driver’s licence has increased to Rs 5000.

According to reports, causing death by accident which is a non-bailable offence will land you in jail for upto 10 years.   The cabinet that was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the new motor vehicles act last year.

“Whoever causes death by doing an act with the intention of causing death, or with the intention of causing such bodily injury as is likely to cause death, or with the knowledge that he is likely by such act to cause death, commits the offence of culpable homicide,” Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code reads as.

The law states that the act will not be considered as negligent driving but as a crime. Furthermore, in a bid to stop the minors from driving, the law has also made stern laws and have affirmed that the registration of the vehicle will be cancelled if in case a juvenile caught driving. Also, if the juvenile commits an accident, his family will have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 that may or may not include jail upto 3 years. The same penalty applies to jumping a red light.

The law further states, that driving without a helmet will cost you Rs 1000 and cancellation of the driving licence. An accused will have to pay a compensation of Rs 2,00,000 in case of death in hit and run cases and Rs 50,000 in case of injuries.
