On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled against the provision of technical education by institutes through distance learning programs. The SC ruling was in harmony with a 2015 verdict of the Punjab and Haryana High Court wherein, the court stated that a degree obtained in computer science through a correspondence course cannot be considered equal to those obtained through regular attendance of classes.
In doing so, the Supreme Court differed from the Odisha high court verdict, which permitted the procurement of a technical degree through distance learning, a TOI report stated.
The move by the apex court will severely impact the lives of students, especially those who cannot afford to move to an educational institution of their liking for a technical course, like engineering. So, if you are hoping to get a technical degree, you might want to save up on the hostel fee too.
While there is no denying that a hands-on experience is important to grasp the technicalities of such courses and would improve the quality of education, the move is undoubtedly going to be a major inconvenience for students who take up distance learning every year.
