A portion of the Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday leaving many vehicles trapped under the fallen structure. Six people have sustained injuries while one person has died, reports NDTV.
The Majerhat bridge,,which was built over rail tracks in Alipur. The bridge collapsed around 4:45 pm. Locals swung into action and helped out those who were trapped as no official reached the spot before 5 pm, reports Hindustan Times.

The Majerhat bridge which was built over rail tracks in Alipur is around 40 years old. At least nine vehicles, including a minibus, and several two-wheelers are feared trapped. Fire brigade, police and NDRF personnel are carrying out the rescue operations.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee who is currently in Darjeeling said the priority for now “is relief and rescue… The rest of the investigation will be done later”.
