Ever thought what’s more dangerous than terror attacks- It’s love. Yes you heard it right, more people in past some years have died from fail in love than from the attacks.
As per a report published in Times of India, in 15 years (from 2001 to 2015), 38, 585 murders and culpable homicide were officially recorded and the cause of all of these was love. Government records too show that the reason for 79, 189 suicides was love.
However terror attacks have killed 20,000 people in the same time. As per the data, highest number of murder cases where love was the motive were registered in Andhra Pradesh. Also Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh are some other states where highest number of suicides took place due to love.
Difference in the caste was one of the major reasons, some killed themselves whereas some were murdered by the known persons who did not approve the relationship.
Retired professor Uma Chakravarti said, “To understand this violence in oppressing a person’s exercise of choice when it comes to marriage, one has to understand patriarchy and caste system.”
With as many as 15,000 suicides, West Bengal recorded the highest number of suicides where love was the cause. These were the numbers even when the data for the year 2012 was not available.
Jagmati Sangwan from All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) said, “Many of these suicides are the result of a hopeless situation created when the state leaves its citizen to be targeted by autocratic institutions that want to maintain caste and class hierarchy.”
