Former Union Minister of Minority Affairs and Present Governor of Manipur, Dr Najma Heptullah has been elected as the new Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, also known as Amir-e-Jamia, for the next five years. She has been elected unanimously by the University’s Court (Anjuman) after a special meeting was held on May 25, 2017. Dr Heptullah has succeeded Lt. Gen. (Retd.) M. A. Zaki who has now completed his tenure of five years while her tenure has begun from May 26, 2017.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s grand niece Dr Heptuah has served as a member of Rajya Sabha for five times from 1968 to 2012. Also, she has been the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for sixteen years.
In 1993, Dr Heptullah had the distinction of presiding over parliamentarians’ group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Later from 1999 to 2002, she was eleceted as the president of an international organisation based in Geneva which was known as Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). She was also nominated as the Human Development Ambassador by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In Narendra Modi’s government, Dr Heptulah served as a Union Minister of Minority Affairs and has also written a book called ‘AIDS: Approaches to Prevention’.
After she was elected unanimously, the present Vice Chancellor of JMI, Prof Talat Ahmad extended his wishes and said,”The university is going to be benefited by her vast experience. It’s our privilege to work with her and to learn many things through her political and public life.”
