Taking a cue from its neighbouring state Uttar Pradesh, Delhi will also cancel public holidays on birth and death anniversaries of famous people. In a series of tweet Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia hailed Yogi Adityanath government’s move to slash 15 such holidays.
“Delhi government will also cancel holidays on birth and death anniversaries of eminent personalities,” he said adding that he has instructed Delhi’s chief secretary to implement this. “The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a good initiative in this matter. We should always be ready to learn from other states,” he said in another tweet.
The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday cancelled 15 public holidays marking the birth or death anniversary of eminent personalities.

“There should be no holidays in schools on birth anniversaries of great personalities. Instead special two-hour programme should be held to teach students about them,” Adityanath said while addressing a gathering on the occasion of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s 126th birth anniversary. However, UP chief minister had plenty of holidays (42), 17 of them birth and death anniversaries, to edit owing to previous Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj wadi party governments apparently to keep sections of society in good humour but Delhi government has far lesser choice. Delhi has nraely 20 public holidays, only three of them including Gandhi Jayanti, Valmiki Jayanti and Mahavir Jayanti are birth anniversaries.
