Following Supreme Court’s order, Uttar Pradesh will soon become the latest state to make marriage registration compulsory for everyone. The proposal of it is drafted by the women’s welfare department and will be put before the state cabinet in the next session.

This is not the first time when such a proposal is in talks, previous Akhilesh Yadav government also formed a committee to make the marriage registration compulsory but members of Muslim community protested against it. After which, SP government decided to not include Muslims in it, however, the proposal never saw the light of the day.
UP’s Women Welfare Minister Rita Bahuguna told PTI, “As per the directions of the Supreme Court, marriage registration has been made mandatory in the country. We have to follow this order as the previous government did nothing in this regard”.

“We are working on it and it will be taken up in the state cabinet meeting,” added Joshi
Some other states have already made marriage registration compulsory these include Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, Rajasthan. These states also impose penalties on those who do not abide by the law.
