Marriage registration to be made compulsory in UP soon

Following Supreme Court’s order, Uttar Pradesh will soon become the latest state to make marriage registration compulsory for everyone. The proposal of it is drafted by the women’s welfare department and will be put before the state cabinet in the next session.

According to IANS, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in the state will cover everyone including Muslims in this new proposal. Those who won’t register their marriage will not be avail benefits from government schemes. This is not the first time when

After which, SP government decided to not include Muslims in it, however, the proposal never saw the light of the day.

UP’s Women Welfare Minister Rita Bahuguna told PTI, “As per the directions of the Supreme Court, marriage registration has been made mandatory in the country. We have to follow this order as the previous government did nothing in this regard”.

“We are working on it and it will be taken up in the state cabinet meeting,” added Joshi

Some other states have already made marriage registration compulsory these include Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, Rajasthan. These states also impose penalties on those who do not abide by the law.
