Income Tax Department officials conducted raid at Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary P. Rammohan Rao’s residence at Anna Nagar on December 21. The officials also raided Rao’s relatives and other places across Tamil Nadu.
Rammohan Rao took the charge as the Chief Secretory of Tamil Nadu in June this year. He also holds the post of Vigilance Commissioner and Commissioner of Additional Reforms.
DMK leader MK Stalin came forward in criticising the raid saying that the raid at Chief Secretary Rammohan Rao’s residence is a “disgrace” to the state. He even added that this was perhaps the first time the raid has been conducted at a Chief Secretary’s residence in the state of Tamil Nadu.
This is not the first time a raid has been conducted by IT department post demonetisation. Several raids are being carried across the country since the Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement of his to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.
Few days back on November 30 and December 1, Rs 6 crore cash was seized from Karnataka and Goa regions by IT officials. Four people were held in the raid.
On December 8 a major exchange racket operating from Chennai was caught by Income tax officials seizing Rs 90 crore in cash including Rs 70 crore in the new currency.
Former BJP leader Mahesh Sharma from West Bengal was arrested by STF on December 6. Rs 33 Lakh in new currency notes(Rs 2,000 notes) was confiscated from him.
