‘Masturbating’ man arrested for sexually molesting woman onboard an IndiGo flight

The 56-year-old man from Rohini was arrested in New Delhi at the IGI Airport for allegedly sexually harassing a woman passenger.

A 56-year-old man was arrested in New Delhi at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on June 17 for allegedly sexually harassing a woman passenger onboard an IndiGo flight. According to media reports, the man was arrested after a woman in her complaint alleged that shortly after she took her seat in the Hyderabad-Delhi flight, her co-passenger unzipped his pants and started masturbating.

A News18 report suggested that as soon as the woman saw the man’s inappropriate actions, she immediately called the air-hostess, following which her seat was changed. When the flight landed at the IGI Airport, the woman lodged a formal complaint.

“Once the flight landed at T-1A, the matter was reported to CISF personnel who informed Delhi Police about the incident. The accused was detained based on the victim’s statement and an FIR was registered,” said an official, according to an Indian Express report

The mam has been identified as Ramesh Chand, who is a resident of Rohini in Delhi. Ramesh was arrested under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 345A (sexual harassment) at Domestic Airport Police Station.

Meanwhile on June 15, a day after TDP MP JC Diwakar Reddy created ruckus and pushed an airline staffer after he was denied boarding by IndiGo for being late, GoAir, Vistara and AirAsia India, Jet Lite joined other airlines in imposing flying ban on Reddy.

Reddy’s behaviour at Vizag airport had prompted a flying ban by state-run Air India as well as SpiceJet and full-service Jet Airways.

Reddy was scheduled to fly on IndiGo flight 6E-608, which departs from Visakhapatnam at 8.10 am, to Hyderabad. But he reached just 28 minutes before the scheduled departure, according to the airline. As per norms laid out by the aviation regulator, airlines close check-in counters for all domestic fights 45 minutes prior to departure.
