Justice Dipak Misra on Monday took oath as the new Chief Justice of India at a ceremony held in the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan. Dipak Misra has succeeded JS Khehar who bid adieu to the post after completing his 240-day journey. Misra was sworn in as the 45th CJI in presence President Ram Nath Kovind. As per the practice, it was Justice Khehar who had named Misra to succeed him last month.
During his tenure, Dipak Misra will be part of the decision-making bench that will be deciding on several important issues including, Ayodhya case, the Cauvery waters dispute, SEBI- Sahara payment row, BCCI reforms, and the Panama Paper leaks. Dipak Misra will retire on October 2, 2018.
As Dipak Misra takes over as the new CJI for 13 months here’s all you need to know about him:
-Before being a part of the High Court Bench, Misra had practised as an advocate in civil, criminal, revenue and sales tax matter in the Orissa High court.
-Justice Misra went to become the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on May 2010 and the Supreme court Judge on October 10, 2011.

-Justice Dipak Mishra headed the bench that had ordered mandatory playing of the national anthem before every movie in the theatre.
-He was also heading the bench responsible for rejecting the 1993 Mumbai serial blast convict Yakub Memon’s plea demanding stay on his execution.
-Justice Misra had also headed the bench that had upheld Delhi High Court’s verdict that had ordered death sentence to the four convicts in the December 16 gangrape case.

-He was also a part of the bench that had dismissed the petition that raised an objection to the title of Amir Khan’s film “Dhobi Ghat” saying that it was just a geographical description of a place and not offensive.
-A Bench led by Dipak Misra had also rejected a plea seeking reservation in promotion in government jobs.
