Harmeet Singh has become Pakistan’s first male Sikh television news anchor. Singh was hired by recently launched news broadcaster ‘Public News’.
The channel introduced Harmeet on Twitter with an introductory video about him. His appointment marks yet another example of inclusivity shown by the Pakistani media industry. Singh hails from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and wants to portray a positive image of minorities in Pakistan.
“I feel good to be the first news anchor representing the Sikh community. My thought was to portray a positive image of Pakistan. About the minorities in Pakistan, you hear a lot of rumours around the world. We have to show that minorities are safe and our life is normal here,” the young anchor said during his introduction.
While the channel has started its operations, Harmeet is yet to get a show. However, he’s expected to make his TV debut soon.
This is not the first time Pakistani media has been in news for democratizing the industry. The year 2018 has been significant in that direction.
Before Harmeet, Manmeet Kaur of Peshawar became the first female Sikh reporter in Pakistan.
A post graduate in social sciences, Kaur believes her work as a journalist will inspire her community which remains at the bottom of the literacy graph.
In March this year, Maavia Malik of Kohenoor News channel became the first transgender news anchor in Pakistan.
