A total of 256 women from across the world featured in the 2018 rich list, the highest ever in magazine's history

Eight Indian women have made it to this year’s Forbes’ list of the world’s richest people.

A total of 256 women featured in the 2018 rich list, the highest ever in magazine’s history, with their collective net worth crossing $1 trillion.

Though most of the women at the top of the list inherited their fortunes, the number of self-made women reached 72 for the first time, up from 56 a year ago, Forbes counted. Here is our list of Indian women billionaires who found a place in this year’s edition of the magazine.

1) Sheela Gautam and Madhu Kapur

Madhu Kapoor and Sheela Gautam found themselves sharing same rank in Forbes 2018 list. Both of them were ranked at the 1,999th place with a net worth of $1.1 billion (Rs 7100 crores approx) each.

With a net worth of $1.1 billion (Rs 7100 crore approx), newcomer Kapur is 1,999th in the Forbes list. She holds 9.3% stake at Yes Bank, which she inherited from her late husband Ashok Kapur, who co-founded the bank with Rana Kapoor. Her husband was killed in 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

Gautam founded Sheela Foam in 1971, which is best known for its Sleepwell brand of mattresses. The 88-year-old was also ranked at the 1,999th place with a net worth of $1.1 billion (Rs 7100 crores approx).

6) Anu Aga:

The 75-year-old entrepreneur regained her billionaire status after a two year hiatus. She is the sixth richest Indian woman on the list, ranked 1,650th with a net worth of $1.4 billion (Rs 9085 crores). Aga owns 62% stake in engineering firm Thermax

5) Vinod Rai Gupta

Vinod and Anil Rai Gupta were placed at the 1,103rd place with a fortune of $2.2 billion (Rs 14 277 crores). The Mother and son duo draw their fortune from a 43 % holding in flagship Havells India. Havells was set up by Vinod’s late husband Qimat Rai Gupta in 1958 as an electricals trading business.

4) Leena Tewari

Leena Tewari, who chairs the privately held USV India, was ranked 1,020th rank with a fortune of $2.4 billion (Rs 15,576 crore). USV is one of India’s leading Pharma company which specialises in making diabetic and cardiovascular drugs.

3) Smita Crishna-Godrej

With a fortune of $2.9 billion (Rs 18,821 crore), Godrej was ranked 822nd in the list of billionaires. Hailing from the renowned Godrej clan, she has a one-fifth stake in the family assets. Her brother Jamshyd runs consumer goods firm Godrej & Boyce, which has a presence across 14 diverse businesses.

2) Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Ranked 629th on the list, the Bio-con chief is the second most richest Indian woman. With a net worth of $3.6 billion (Rs 23,362 crore), she is India’s richest self made woman. Biocon makes a range of generic active pharmaceutical ingredients to treat, among much else, autoimmune diseases, diabetes and cancer.

1) Savitri Jindal 

Savitri is the widow of Om Prakash Jindal, founder of Jindal Group, a global giant whose interests include steel, power, cement and infrastructure. With a global rank of 176, Savitri Jindal and family is the richest among Indians with a fortune of $8.8 billion (Rs 57,112 crore).

The magazine also noted that there are now a record 2,208 billionaires in the world, with their combined worth reaching $9.1 trillion, 18 percent up from last year.
