Mohit Goel, founder of world’s cheapest smartphone, is class VIII fail: Police

Mohit Goel, the managing director of Ringing Bells Private Limited that promised to launch world’s cheapest phone, has  mentioned in his LinkedIn profile that he has an MBA (Marketing) degree from Amity University, and a Bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Sydney University.

Goel’s firm Ringing bells shot to fame after it promised to launch world’s cheapest phone Freedom 251 at a dazzling price of Rs 250.

However, after his arrest on February 23 over fraud allegations, Goel told police that he had only studied till class VIII after which he took lessons to improve his “English speaking skills”, a report by ‘The Indian Express’ has said.

“Initially he told us he had an MBA degree from Amity University. Later, he claimed he had studied till Class VIII, and that he failed his exams. He belongs to a middle-class family from Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh. He took an English-speaking course. These are claims he made during preliminary investigation. We are verifying what he said,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying by the paper..

The founder was arrested after a dealer said he had paid Rs. 30 lakhs for an order of handsets but had received only a fraction of the order.

The dealer said he received only Rs. 14 lakhs in new phones and cash. When he pursued Ringing Bells for a refund for the unfulfilled order, the dealer said Mr Goel and another executive at the mobile phone maker threatened to kill him and his family.
