Mumbai flooded with rain, residents offer food and shelter via Twitter

Due to continuous rains in Mumbai since morning, there has been widespread water logging in many parts of the city. It is believed that the city is witnessing the heaviest rain since July 26, 2005. The heavy downpour has crippled life in the metro city and more rainfall is expected in next 24 hours.

The residents are advised to stay home and the disaster management team has also been deployed. Train services have been severely hit with tracks flooded with water, flights are delayed. Owing to heavy rain, the traffic in the city has come to a standstill. The government has also the employees to leave the office early.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the state disaster management control room to check the preparedness. He said, “Request people to follow traffic advisories being issued. You can also tweet to/call Mumbai Police, police will come to your rescue”.

AK Srivastav, head of climate monitoring and analysis at IMD Pune, said “areas such as Mumbai, south Gujarat, Konkan, Goa and West Vidarbha will get extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 to 48 hours. It is a serious situation. We have issued necessary warnings to departments concerned, including airports”.

On Tuesday, between 8.30am to 2.30pm, south Mumbai recorded 37.6mm rains while suburbs recorded 126mm rain. Police also took to twitter and have asked the residents to stay indoors and only go out if it’s very important.
