Mumbai Police arrests Bulgarian national for cloning ATM cards, making withdrawals

A Bulgarian national was arrested by the Mumbai Police for allegedly defrauding ATM card holders by withdrawing money from their bank accounts with cloned ATM cards.

According to reports, the accused has been identified as Acklando Mykhaylo, who allegedly used the data of the ATM cards — the 16 digit card number and the name of the card holder — and cloned the cards of various banks. He used these cards to make fraudulent transactions from the ATM, impersonating the card holder.

The fraud came to light after a senior official of a leading bank spotted a golden coloured plastic cloned card at their ATM in Juhu. Sensing something amiss, the bank conducted an inquiry during which it was revealed that Mykhaylo had used several cloned cards at different ATMs and had withdrawn money from people’s account.

After this discovery, the case was registered in the cyber police station and the cops laid a trap to nab Mykhaylo. According to police, Mykhaylo was captured in the camera at the ATM, which helped police track him and acquire the information about the withdrawal he made from the ATMs that made clear his involvement in the crime.

After nabbing the accused, the police searched his house and recovered cash, pen drives, net dongles, hard disks, mobile phones, a laptop bag and eight cloned cards.

Mykhaylo has been booked under section 319(impersonating),320(cheating) of Indian Penal Code and 66C(identity theft) and 66D (impersonating using a computer) of Information Technology Act.

In 2013, two Bulgarian nationals had allegedly installed a skimming device at an ATM outside the office of the Director General of Police following which, several policemen had lost money from their accounts.
